Noel was one of the saddest dogs one could ever expect to see at a shelter. Huddled between four other dogs, she sat shaking in the "Female Relink" cage. "Relink" dogs have been turned in by their owner and generally have the shortest time period to live. (Legally, a shelter only has to hold the dog for two days to give the owner a chance to change his mind.) Her eyes showed such torment that without even fully knowing her size and features, Ariel Rescue decided to save her.

Noel was rescued from the shelter and taken to the veterinarian for a full check-up. Everyone noticed she walked "as if on eggshells", almost too terrified to take a step. She was so shy and frightened, withdrawing completely when anyone tried to approach. The poor dog's back was covered in scabs, a skin infection resulting from severe flea infestation. She was horribly emaciated and patches of fur were missing where the skin infection had been. Her ears were infected as well. Based on the information obtained by the animal control officer, Noel had been used to watch the property at a business and left outside to fend for herself. No one had spent time with her and she had not been to a veterinarian. The abuse and neglect this dog had suffered were evident.

Once Noel's health started to improve, Ariel Rescue brought her into a foster home. Poor little Noel was so frightened, it made us wonder "Why did someone do this to you?" Over and over, volunteers told her "Don't worry Noel, no one is going to hurt you again". At first, she didn't trust and the slightest noise or change would terrify her. She would go on walks and shake because of the sound of the traffic. In the car, she would sit in the back and hide her head under the driver's seat. Our constant reassurance s started to get through and every now and then, we would see a brief wag of her tail.

Noel was adopted by a wonderful couple who worked hard to bring her out of her shell. Mom Lori cooked her yummy nutritious meals and Dad Paul took her on lots of fun walks in the park. They noticed immediately how eager she was to please them and found her to be a remarkably well-behaved dog. Today, the shaking and fear is behind her and she smiles and wags her tail whenever she sees them.. She lives happily with their two cats and knows that now her long journey is finally over---so says Noel
"There's no place like home".

MADDY

with her new
buddy
REYNA

Hi! My name is MADDY

Hi! My name is Maddy (short for Madeline-dog on the right) and I am just so happy to be lying here with my new buddy Reyna on this beautiful white sofa!

Maddy was used for breeding and when her owners had enough of her, they let her loose to fend for herself. She was found starving and wandering in a poor, gang neighborhood of Los Angeles. An Animal Control Officer then brought her to Downey Shelter. Locked in a cage with three other dogs, Maddy's sad eyes begged us to save her. Ariel Rescue came to her aid and from that day forward her life has never been the same.

First, she was brought to a veterinarian and treated for minor ailments. Since she had just been spayed at the shelter, she was weak and tired. At first, Maddy was so frightened, it took every bit of courage for her to move. Ariel Rescue was concerned that she might have neurological problems because she was literally paralyzed with fear. Aside from being very skinny, there was nothing significant wrong with her and after a beauty bath she was on her way.

Maddy was adopted by a wonderful woman who loves Dalmations and wanted to do everything she could to help her. She and her dog Reyna welcomed Maddy into their home and now the two dogs are inseparable. They run and play all day long and are the best of friends. Maddy's dream came true and she knows she is finally "home at last".

MISSI
The
Snow
Doggy

Missi's Story

Missy was saved from Downey Shelter in the summer of 2000. In spite of the conditions, Missy still managed to be cheerful and friendly with everyone. She was full of personality and was an exceptionally special dog. Her last day had come and gone and everyone was sad that she might have to put to sleep. Ariel Rescue came to save her and give her a second chance.

The poor girl was skinny and sad with patches of fur missing.. She was just a young pup and had experienced so much neglect in her short life. Missy was adopted by a wonderful couple who have given her the love and family she so deserves. She lives with two cats and gets along with everybody. They go on fun adventures, hiking and camping and exploring the great outdoors. Missy is finally home and is pictured here living "a dog's life" romping in the snow.
